Puppy Training Facts - Did you know?

  1. Dog friendly training involves reinforcing wanted behaviors, ignoring unwanted behaviors, and teaching a behavior that is incompatible with the unwanted behavior.
  2. When training is done well, the dog has fun and looks forward to his/her sessions. Good training should include the use of rewards (positive reinforcement), most typically food but also toys and praise, to help.
  3. Dogs practice and perfect their skills each time they perform a behavior and this rule is true for both good and bad behaviour.
  4. As a general rule puppies will need an opportunity to relieve themselves approximately every two hours.
  5. Dogs can not tell the time, but they are good at making associations. If your dog always greets you when you return home they will have certain triggers that alert them. For example, the sound of your car moving into the garage or keys in the lock.
  6. Research has shown that, contrary to popular belief, dogs do see in colour. Dogs appear to see colours in two ranges: violet to blue violet, and yellow. Although their abilities are limited compared to ours, they have excellent low-light vision.
  7. Assertive puppies need more structure and shy puppies need more socialization.
  8. Barking may be an indication of stress. Salivation, increased heart and respiratory rates are also possible indicators of stress.
  9. Obedience training provides your dog with vital information concerning its social rank in the family and has benefits which increase the probability of a happy long term relationship.
  10. Puppy training establishes a safe method for communicating with your dog.
